Former Notre Dame Fighting Irish player Tommy Tremble joins the Carolina Panthers, who selected him in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft with the No. 83 pick. He might have the most potential of this year’s tight end class outside of Kyle Pitts. He played in just two seasons with Notre Dame and was part of an incredibly talented tight end room both years, which limited his production in the passing game.
Tremble played behind Cole Kmet to start his career, and standout freshman Michael Mayer played a big role at the position last year for the Irish. Tremble put together similar numbers in both seasons but in 10 games in 2020, he caught 19 passes for 218 yards and was held out of the end zone.
Scouting Report
Tremble would’ve had much better numbers if he played for a different team in college, but his career at Notre Dame could be a blessing in disguise as he developed into a productive blocker, something many tight ends in this class need work on. Tremble could improve as a pass catcher as he was not as sure handed in college as he will need to be in the NFL. If he can get better at actually catching the ball, he has the speed and athleticism to make a big difference as a pass catcher and see the field on every down early on.
Fantasy football impact
Rookie
The Panthers landed a solid tight end who can be incredibly versatile at the position at the next level. It’s difficult to predict tight end success in the first season, but he’s a player worth keeping an eye on as it gets closer to draft time. Carolina does not have an incredibly deep tight end room, so Tremble should see some time early. It’s unlikely he will be much of a factor in Year 1, but preseason games could be worth watching.
Long-term
Tremble has relatively high potential as a tight end at the NFL level, so he can be looked at in certain dynasty formats. He has the ability to be a difference maker at a position that can be a bit touchdown or bust outside of the top few players. We did not get to see what Tremble could do as a No. 1 tight end option in college, but we may get that chance early on in Carolina.
