Crazy 49ers-Aaron Rodgers trade rumor means we’re almost through the silly season

The 2021 NFL Draft rumor mill is not going to come to a close without one last gasp crazy idea.

Is Mac Jones a good fit in San Francisco?

UPDATE: Aaron Rodgers apparently is unhappy with the Packers and wants out of Green Bay. Nothing may come of it but it certainly makes this report that much more interesting.

UPDATE: Tom Pelissero is reporting the 49ers did in fact reach out to the Packers on Wednesday about Aaron Rodgers but nothing came of it.

The 2021 NFL Draft kicks off Thursday evening, and it can’t come soon enough. The silly season will come to a close for at least a few days.

As of this article publishing, it’s lunch time on the east coast and we’ve got a little over eight hours remaining until the Jacksonville Jaguars officially go on the clock. They’ll select Trevor Lawrence, the New York Jets will likely select Zach Wilson, and then things start to get interesting with the San Francisco 49ers at No. 3.

However, before then, the uncertainty around the 49ers pick means we have time for a few last minute crazy trade suggestions. This report involving Aaron Rodgers and Jimmy Garoppolo might be the craziest one we’ll see today.

In the 30 minutes since this tweet first posted, numerous beat writers and self-proclaimed insiders have shot it down in a hurry. They said no call was made and there is zero truth to the rumor.

Regardless of whether or not the 49ers actually placed such a call, we should take a moment to enjoy this one. The 49ers are most definitely trying to trade Jimmy Garoppolo, but can you imagine the Green Bay Packers making such a move a year removed from drafting Jordan Love in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft? Anything is certainly possible, but it just seems hard to buy them pulling the trigger on this.

Reporters are saying no such call was made, but I suppose it would not be entirely shocking for the 49ers to make what they think is a proverbial “Godfather offer” to the Packers. Whether Garoppolo, the No. 3 and “a number of players” is such an offer remains to be seen, but if it was, clearly Green Bay disagreed.

For now though, this has quickly shot to the list of craziest reports from the 2021 offseason. We’ve got a little over eight hours until the 49ers are on the clock, so we’ll see if it can get any crazier!
