The San Francisco 49ers head into the 2021 NFL Draft having re-signed a sizable number of key parts. Of course, they also come into the draft with a huge question at the most important position. The team moved up from No. 12 to No. 3, dealing two future first round picks to the Dolphins to get in position to select their quarterback of the future.
The 49ers may or may not deal away Jimmy Garoppolo before the close of the draft, but we know with certainty they will be drafting his eventual replacement on Thursday. Whether it’s Mac Jones, Trey Lance, or Justin Fields, Jimmy G’s time in the Bay Area is coming to a close sooner than later.
The 49ers have other needs to fill, but the quarterback position is the one people will be laser-focused on and talking about well beyond the draft.

Fantasy football impact
Trey Lance, QB
Jimmy Garoppolo helped get the 49ers oh so close to the mountain top, but he couldn’t finish the job. Kyle Shanahan and company will now turn to North Dakota State QB Trey Lance. He should quickly be a fantasy value, as his legs and Shanahan’s scheme will be tough to slow down.
Trey Sermon, RB
Shanahan backfields can be problematic for fantasy football managers, and the 49ers are not making it easier. Sermon gives the 49ers arguably the most talented backfield, but it will be tough to sort out for fantasy managers. Sermon is the long-term option, so he makes a great dynasty play coming into a Shanahan offense. For 2021 however, he’ll likely find himself splitting time with Jeff Wilson and Raheem Mostert. We could see a different running back leading the team every week. Sermon is the highest upside option, but there are limitations this first year.
