The 2021 Best Supporting Actor category at the Academy Awards has one clear favorite, and a range of talented other stars that don’t seem to have much of a chance.

Daniel Kaluuya’s role of Fred Hampton, the charismatic activist and Chairman of the Illinois Black Panther Party in Judas and the Black Messiah is the overwhelming favorite to win the award. The meaty role might have been a better fit for the Best Actor category, but going against Chadwick Boseman in 2021 for that statuette is a fool’s errand.

Kaluuya powerful work should take the day here, but Sacha Baron Cohen portraying another real-life activist in Abbie Hoffman is what brings his first dramatic role Oscar nomination. The writing of Aaron Sorkin gives the Borat star plenty of room to maneuver, and he’s the second choice but still a longshot.

Longtime character actor Paul Raci is up for his work as Joe in The Sound of Metal, where he plays a Vietnam War veteran welcoming to the going deaf title character of Ruben.
