The 2021 Academy Awards air this Sunday, April 25th on ABC. This year’s Oscars will go without a host for the third straight year. The show has gone host-less the past two years dating to Kevin Hart’s decision to step down as host of the 2019 show after uproar over his past homophobic comments.
The last Oscars host was in 2018 when late night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel hosted for a second straight year. Prior to that, the show had alternated hosts dating back to 1999. The most recent hosts before Kimmel were Chris Rock, Neil Patrick Harris, Ellen DeGeneres, Seth MacFarlane, and Billy Crystal.
Crystal’s last time hosting in 2012 marked his ninth time hosting the show. He’s second all-time to Bob Hope, who hosted the show 19 times over the years. Johnny Carson was third with five hosting appearances, followed by Whoopi Goldberg and Jack Lemmon with four apiece.
MacFarlane’s hosting gig in 2013 was also the last time the host was also nominated for a category. He was nominated for Best Original Song for Ted. It marked the sixth time a host was also nominated for an Oscar.
