The 2021 Oscars are a bit further behind than usual in the awards season calendar, and the ceremony on April 25th comes at a challenging time for cinema in general. With so many theaters forced to close due to COVID-19, most of the awards below will be for films that were viewed at home, and there’s been a dearth of buzz around many of the films involved.
Expect that to change over the next week or two as we get closer Hollywood’s Biggest Night. And in several states, including New Jersey, you can also wager on the winners
The big favorite for several major awards is Nomadland, which is being called a triumph by director Chloe Zhao. Two-time Oscar winner Frances McDormand stars as a woman traveling the American West with only her van and the relationships of her fellow wanderers.
Aaron Sorkin’s The Trial of the Chicago 7 is the second choice, recounting the court appearance of those charged with incitement to riot during the 1968 Democratic National Convention, including such names as Abbie Hoffman and Bobby Seale. It’s filled with Sorkin’s-signature stem-winding dialogue, and is more of a favorite in the original screenplay category.
If you’re looking for a film to come from behind as Parasite did in 2020, Mank might be the best choice. The biopic about screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz while creating the classic Citizen Kane has the navel-gaziness that Tinseltown loves when issuing statuettes, David Fincher is a Hollywood favorite, and his late father Jack writing the screenplay will be a story that voters will enjoy.
Below is a list of the odds available to bet on the 2021 Oscars courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook.
