The Jacksonville Jaguars will use their franchise tag on left tackle Cam Robinson, according to Tom Pelissero. If Robinson and the Jaguars cannot come to terms on an extension, the offensive lineman will earn $13,754,000 under the official salary cap of $182.5 million.
The move was expected, but today marked the deadline to get it done. The Jaguars are about to add quarterback Trevor Lawrence in the 2021 NFL Draft, and will look to Robinson to protect his blind side.
Robinson did not grade out well at Pro Football Focus last year, ranking 42nd out of 59 qualifying tackles in pass blocking. Jacksonville’s offensive line ranked 25th in adjusted sack rate and 11th in run blocking.
NFL teams were able to start tagging players starting on Tuesday, February 23rd with a deadline of March 9th. Teams can still sign a tagged player to a longterm deal up until July 15th. Players would rather get longterm deals instead of a single season franchise tag that gives them a one-year contract, but they do get a reasonable sum. Unfortunately that payday doesn’t come with much longterm security.
