Does Blake Griffin signing impact Nets’ future outlook?

The Brooklyn Nets officially announced the signing of free agent forward Blake Griffin on Monday morning. The six-time All-Star reached a buyout with the Detroit Pistons last week and was made a free agent. Shortly after it was reported Griffin was expected to land in Brooklyn, a place he can chase a title. Alongside Kyrie Irving, Kevin Durant and James Harden, Griffin will give the Nets a bit more depth in the frontcourt, something they lost after dealing for The Beard. So now that the Nets have added Griffin, what does this mean for their title odds?

So the Nets’ odds to win the title didn’t really move much with the Griffin signing. Brooklyn is still +300 to win it all, second-best odds behind the Los Angeles Lakers at +250 on DraftKings Sportsbook. Griffin just isn’t the type of player he used to be. Really, the Nets were strong contenders without Griffin. There’s no real way Griffin can hurt the Nets. There’s definitely a scenario in which he doesn’t really do much.

That scenario would be Griffin not being able to play because of a potential injury. Hopefully this isn’t the case, but Griffin has had injury issues since back in 2015-16 while with the Los Angeles Clippers. Chances are the Nets ease Griffin into his new role on the team. He’ll likely come off the bench, which could mean around 20-25 minutes per game. The Nets will likely opt to use Jeff Green and DeAndre Jordan in the frontcourt with KD over Griffin.

This is mostly because Griffin’s numbers with the Pistons this season were horrible. He played over 30 minutes and averaged just 12.3 points and 5.3 rebounds with 36/31/71 shooting splits. Perhaps a decreased role off the bench while playing with significantly better teammates will help Griffin become a bit more efficient. My guess is this will be the case more-so than Griffin just being a black hole off the bench.

Again, the Nets were in good position to win the East and win it all come playoff time before the Griffin signing. There’s a better chance that we get a glimpse of Griffin on the Nets and the line shifts after than the line moving negatively after seeing Griffin perform. So there’s some value in getting the Nets at +300 to win it all or +130 to win the East now.
