The AAC will get a major marquee matchup to close its regular season slate on national television on Sunday as the surging Memphis Tigers travel down to the Fertitta Center to battle the No. 9 Houston Cougars.

The Cougars (20-3, 13-3 AAC) have earned the distinction of being a top-10 team in the country heading into tournament season, rolling right through the AAC schedule with just a few hiccups along the way. Led by Naismith Trophy semifinalist Quentin Grimes, the Cougars are sixth in KenPom, ranking fifth in adjusted efficiency metrics on defense and fifth on offense. UH can really bolster their case for a possible two-seed in the NCAA Tournament by picking up a Quadrant 2 victory on Sunday.

In turn, Memphis (15-6, 11-3 AAC) has been the hottest team in the American over the last six weeks, winners of six straight and nine of their last 10. That has been in large part to being the second-ranked team in adjusted efficiency, not allowing a single opponent to score more than 75 points all season long. The Tigers have been steadily building their NCAA Tournament resume and a Quadrant 1 victory over Houston would solidly stamp their ticket to Indianapolis.

The Best Bet

Sometimes college athletics is about how you’re playing and how badly you need the win. This seems to be one of those cases. Memphis has to have this game to have any shot at an at-large NCAA bid, and Houston hasn’t played a competitive game in three weeks. The Tigers might not get it done, but they should fight hard and keep it close.

Pick: Memphis +9.5
