Sergio Garcia hits walk-off hole-in-one to win group at WGC Match Play Championship

Sergio Garcia might have hit the first walk-off hole-in-one in golf history to win his group at the WGC Match Play Championship

The format of the event puts golfers in groups of four, where everyone plays each other over the course of three days. But if two golfers are tied on points after three days the head-to-head play, they’ll go to sudden death. And that’s where this flawless iron on the Par 3, 160-yard fourth hole spun back and into history.

Lee Westwood is the unfortunate victim here, probably happy to be on the center of the green and forcing Garcia to hit a good shot to match him. Whoops. Both players had made par on each of the first three holes of the playoff, and both were 2-1 with no ties entering the last day of play. So all separated them after more than three days of play was the ace.

Garcia was the third-seeded player in Group 8 behind Tyrrell Hatton and Westwood, with Matt Wallace the fourth. “El Niño” was +4500 before the tournament to win the event at DraftKings Sportsbook, but is now in the last 16 and four rounds from the title at Austin Country Club.
