Zach Wilson works out at BYU Pro Day for host of NFL teams

We take a look at the pro day performance of one of 2021’s top quarterback prospects, Zach Wilson out of BYU.

Afternoon update: Zach Wilson’s pro day couldn’t have gone much better. As his frame has been a concern out of BYU, he did weigh in nearly an inch shorter than listed at school and a full four pounds heavier. As draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah said, “That’s the throw of the Pro Day season right there.” The only thing is, it would be hard to pick just one throw. As Dane Brugler notes below, it seems inevitable that Wilson emerges as the second overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

BREAKING: The 49ers, with GM John Lynch present at BYU’s Pro Day, have officially traded up to the No. 3 overall pick. They acquire the No. 3 pick from the Miami Dolphins in exchange for the No. 12 pick, a 2021 third-round pick, and first-round picks in 2022 and 2023. It becomes clear that the 49ers are in on one of these top quarterback prospects.

BYU quarterback prospect Zach Wilson is participating in his school’s Pro Day on Friday, March 26. He is going through a workout for NFL teams, with plenty of scouts in attendance. We’ll update this with more results as the workout wraps up. You can watch it live on NFL Network, or live stream it here.

Zach Wilson pro day measurements and performance

Height: 6’2 1/8”
Weight: 214 lbs.
Hand size: 9 1/2”

Zach Wilson doesn’t boast the same level of polish as does Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence, but he did close out his career at BYU showcasing his tremendous upside. In the 2020 season, he led the team to an 11-1 record while ranking third in the FBS in passing yards. Among quarterbacks in the FBS with at least 200 dropbacks, Wilson ranked second in yards per pass attempt (11.0), second in completion rate (72.7%), second in NFL passer rating (136.3) and third in passing touchdowns (32).

Watching Wilson, the thing that stands out is his ability to make passes that he shouldn’t be able to make, à la the “Patrick Mahomes no-look pass” variety. He’s got a strong arm, and even in when throwing from an awkward platform or across his body, he can still make it look easy. His ability to maneuver the pocket and scramble should be noted too.

Wilson rolled in as the No. 4 overall draft prospect on Daniel Jeremiah’s latest top-50 rankings as the QB2, only behind Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence.
