Free agent offensive tackle Trent Williams will return to the San Francisco 49ers. The 49ers have re-signed Williams, according to ESPN’s Diana Russini.
Williams was widely regarded as the best free-agent on the market once the franchise tag deadline passed. He has started 133 games throughout his nine-year career. Though he’s entering his age-33 season, he’s still playing at an extremely high level. And the 49ers offensive line was in desperate need to keep him and his ability to anchor the whole line.
Williams will help the 49ers offense run much more smoothly than if he wasn’t there and should help elevate those around him. San Francisco will still need to shore up spots on the line, but this was a must acquisition, even at his high price. The good news is that they also signed Alex Mack, giving the team some extra beef on the offensive line and almost assuring another above average group in San Francisco.
Williams becomes the highest paid lineman by exactly $10,000 over the Packers David Bakhtiari, who sent his congratulations via Twitter:
