UPDATE: The semifinals match up between No. 1 Virginia vs. No. 4 Georgia Tech has officially been canceled due to a positive COVID-19 test in Virginia’s program. Georgia Tech will advance to the finals.
We were almost gifted with a trio of ACC upsets on Thursday, as Syracuse and Miami both came close to taking down some of the conference's best teams. North Carolina actually managed to soil Virginia Tech’s ACC title dreams though, and now the Tar Heels will face arguably the most dangerous team in the ACC on Friday.
We’ve got everything you need to know for today’s action from the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, North Carolina. Each of the ACC Tournament semifinals games are slated to air on ESPN and ESPN2.
No. 1 Virginia vs. No. 4 Georgia Tech, 6:30 p.m. ESPN or ESPN2
Point Spread: Virginia -4
Point Total: 128.5
The Hoos got through in dramatic fashion, holding off a desperate Syracuse team that was playing to get off the tournament bubble. The Yellow Jackets also had a close call in the second round and just managed to squeak by the banged-up Hurricanes. Virginia is 2-0 against Georgia Tech this year but is just .500 against the spread at 11-11-1.
The pick: Virginia -4
No. 2 Florida State vs. North Carolina winner, 9:00 p.m. ESPN or ESPN2
Point Spread: FSU -2
Point Total: 150.5
FSU is clearly a better team than UNC this season, but the Tar Heels are determined to be a Cinderella story. The Seminoles are elite offensively and will have to be very efficient to take down a Tar Heel team that split the two regular season bouts. UNC controls the boards better than just about every team in the country (rebound margin +11, 413% offensive rebound rate). The favorite will have to match the underdogs’ physicality to cover, which we don’t think they can after the rare triple-bye due to Duke’s COVID-19 issue.
The pick: UNC +2
