Virginia sinks Syracuse with buzzer beater in ACC quarterfinals

The Orange will have to wait until Selection Sunday to find out if they’ll be in the NCAA Tournament.

Virginia Cavaliers guard Reece Beekman drives to the basket against Syracuse Orange forward Marek Dolezaj during the first half in the quarterfinal round of the 2021 ACC Tournament  Nell Redmond-USA TODAY Sports

A flawless buzzer beater by Reece Beekman was the difference as the No. 1 seed Virginia Cavaliers advanced to the ACC semifinals with a 72-69 win over the No. 8 Syracuse Orange on Saturday in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Pure as the driven snow. Kihei Clark with the drive to draw the top of the 2-3 zone defense, and Beekman with a flawless step-in three-pointer.

It’s probably the biggest shot of the season in determining the field of 68 for the NCAA Tournament, as Syracuse entered today’s game as the stone bubble team according to the bracketologists we’re tracking at DK Nation. Now the Orange will be forced to wait until Selection Sunday to find out if they’ll be playing next week in Indiana, or perhaps in the NIT.

Syracuse entered the game at 16-9, 9-7 in the ACC, but with a 2-7 record on the road this season. They’re No. 39 in the NET and No. 44 in KenPom, but will finish the season just 1-7 in Quad 1 games.
