The New York Yankees have signed Corey Kluber, taking the star pitcher off of the free agency market. Kluber signed a one-year contract worth $11 million, per Mark Feinsand of MLB.com.
Kluber held a workout for teams last month after only making one start last season for the Texas Rangers. The 34-year-old veteran pitcher only tossed one scoreless inning as he suffered a Grade 2 tear of the teres muscle in his right shoulder, effectively ending his season.
Before he was traded to the Rangers in 2020, Kluber spent the previous nine years with the Cleveland Indians, where he established himself as one of the best pitchers in the majors. Kluber’s best season with Cleveland happened in 2017 when he won his second Cy Young award.
During that season, he posted a record of 18-4 with a career-best ERA of 2.25. It was also Kluber’s second-straight season with at least 18 wins and would be his third consecutive season where he recorded 10 or more wins. The Yankees are hoping that they can get that Kluber or even the one in 2018, who had a record of 20-7 and an ERA of 2.89.
Corey Kluber came up in the San Diego Padres system for three years, before being traded to the Cleveland Indians in 2010.
