How and what to watch for No. 6 Houston vs. Wichita State

The only thing warm in Houston right now are the Cougars, who are one of the best teams in America on both sides of the ball.

The No. 6 Houston Cougars managed to get out of the weather chaos in Texas, and are scheduled to meet the Wichita State Shockers on Thursday night in The Roundhouse in a key American Conference matchup.

UH (17-2, 11-2 AAC) have struggled with COVID-19 stoppages all year, with head coach Kelvin Sampson saying at one point the entire team has had the virus. Despite plenty of game cancelations and reschedulings, the Coogs have the No. 1 defense in America via eFG, holding opponents to just 42.1%, and just 26.9% from three-point range. Quentin Grimes is likely the AAC Player of The Year, averaging 16.9 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game.

Wichita State (12-4, 8-2 AAC) has a quality record after the Gregg Marshall turmoil and coaching change before the season, but not many quality wins. They beat Mississippi 83-79 on the road for their only Quad 1 victory this season, and need to beat the UH team that defeated them 70-63 in Houston earlier this season. Tyson Etienne is one of the leading scorers in the AAC at 17.3 ppg, but the Shockers struggle on the glass, and this is a tough matchup in terms of rebounding ability.

The Best Bet

If the Cougars are focused and able to concentrate on the game considering what’s happening in their home state right now, they should have the decided advantage. UH only won the previous meeting 30-27 on the glass, but that’s likely an outlier.

Pick: Houston -7.5
