No. 24 Purdue and Minnesota are set to face off for the second time this season in a Big Ten matchup on Thursday. The Boilermakers handed the Golden Gophers an embarrassing defeat in January but will have to go on the road this time around. Will things turn out differently?

Purdue (13-7, 8-5 Big Ten) rebounded from a loss to Maryland by taking down Northwestern on Saturday. It took down Minnesota by 19 earlier this year thanks to a 29-point performance from Brandon Newman. There’s no telling who will take the lead for the Boilermakers. Their leading scorer and rebounder — Trevion Williams — is one of the candidates most likely to step things up a notch.

Minnesota (12-7, 5-7 Big Ten) will only go as far as Marcus Carr takes it. The junior lead guard only scored six points the last time he faced Purdue and will have to get much closer to his season average of 19.9 points for the Golden Gophers to be competitive. Carr also leads Minneota in assists and steals per game.

Point Spread, Totals, Odds, Trends

Point spread: Minnesota -2
Point Total: 138.5

  • Purdue is 9-10-1 against the spread, and the over is 11-9
  • Minnesota is 9-9-1 against the spread, and the over is 9-10

The Best Bet

New probably won’t go for another career-high, but Purdue’s ability to take Carr out of the game makes me confident in the favorites here. Eric Hunter Jr. held one of the nation’s best scorers to 2-of-13 shooting. Carr won’t be that bad again but applying constant pressure to him gives the Boilermakers an edge.

Pick: Minnesota -2
