No. 5 Villanova rebounded from its surprising loss to St. Johns last week by beating Georgetown to wrap up the weekend, and the Wildcats will kick off this week with a matchup against Marquette on Wednesday. Marquette lost to St. Johns by a minuscule margin late last month. Can it compete with a contender this time around?
The Wildcats’ (12-2, 7-1) only other loss this year came against the ACC’s Virginia Tech in November. They’ve typically been dominant and sit atop the Big East standings ahead of their Saturday matchup against No. 19 Creighton. Jermaine Samuels expectedly stole the Spotlight from Jeremiah Robinson-Earl in Villanova’s last win by scoring 32 points, but both could be vital against an underdog that’s played very well lately.
The Golden Eagles (9-10-, 5-8) only lost to No. 19 Creighton by three points in its last game and haven’t lost by more than that in their last three contests. D.J. Carton leads Marquette in points, assists, and steals per game and has been at the center of most things his team does. Can the sophomore guard play well enough to prevent his team from getting blown out?
