Monday evening update: There’s more smoke to this fire and it’s looking like Brian Kelly is Baton Rouge bound.
Sources: LSU is expecting to hire Notre Dame’s Brian Kelly as the school’s next head coach. An announcement could come as early as tomorrow.— Pete Thamel (@PeteThamel) November 30, 2021
The college football coaching carousel could potentially spiral even further out of control depending on the next move from Baton Rouge.
The Athletic is reporting that LSU is making an “aggressive push” to target longtime Notre Dame Fighting Irish head football coach Brian Kelly to come fill the vacancy in Baton Rouge. Secret Base contributor and Split Zone Duo co-host Steven Godfrey also alluded to this on Sunday.

LSU has a Hail Mary
Sometimes the timing doesn't work though
LSU has been looking to fill its head coaching vacancy since agreeing to part ways with national championship winning head coach Ed Orgeron in mid-October. With athletic director Scott Woodward’s reputation pulling “white whales” during head coaching hires, several big-time names have been associated to this search. The biggest name was reportedly Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher, although he has publicly rebuffed these rumors multiple times.
As for Kelly, he has spent just over the last decade elevating Notre Dame back into being a Top 10 program. In 12 seasons in South Bend, IN, he has posted a 92-39 record, including a current streak of five consecutive 10+ win seasons. The Fighting Irish, however, have been unable to compete with juggernauts like Alabama and Clemson in the postseason. The thought is that perhaps Kelly has maxed out everything he could possibly do with the program and is seeking a new challenge in the SEC.
A move of this magnitude would send a ripple effect throughout the entire sport in a similar way USC poaching Lincoln Riley from Oklahoma did on Sunday. We’ll see if Woodward and company does actually pull it out.
