Figueroa vs. Fulton results: Who won, final scorecards, round-by-round updates, winner, more

Update 1:12 a.m. It’s a majority decision: Stephen Fulton Jr. defeats Brandon Figueroa (116-112, 116-112, 114-114).

And in the post-fight interviews with Jim Gray holding a microphone between both boxers, they both agree to a rematch. Of course both fighters feel they won, and it was a classic. Someone from Fulton’s corner said “Let’s run it back!” and that sounds like a terrific idea.

Update 12:16 a.m. Brandon “The Heartbreaker” Figueroa makes his way to the ring with a mariachi band with his family at ringside. And Fulton comes out in a full sombrero himself despite no known ties to Mexico, but the Philadelphian has “Macc N Cheese” from Ignore as his music instead. We’re about to be underway!

Update 12:05 a.m. Here are some early results from the undercard of Figueroa vs. Fulton:

• Gary Antonio Russell 19-0 (12 KOs) defeats Alexandro Santiago (24-3-5, 13 KOs) by Majority Decision: (96-94, 96-94, 95-95)
• Raeese Aleem defeats Eduardo Baez by Majority Decision (95-95, 96-94, 98-92)

It’s a busy night of fighting and Las Vegas actually has the lower profile matchup. While Madison Square Garden plays host to the lightweight championship of the world, the Park MGM in Las Vegas will host a significant junior featherweight fight between Brandon Figueroa and Stephen Fulton.

Figueroa brings a 22-0-1 record and the WBC title to the ring while Fulton brings a 19-0 record and his WBO title to the ring. The two men will enter the ring sometime around the 11 p.m. ET hour on Showtime. Neither will be the undisputed junior featherweight champ with a win, but both will have a legitimate claim as the best junior featherweight.

The referee for Saturday’s title fight is Russell Mora. The judges will be Tim Cheatham (Nevada), Dave Moretti (Nevada), and David Sutherland (Oklahoma).

Fulton is a decent sized favorite to win at DraftKings Sportsbook. He’s installed at -310 while Fulton is a +240 underdog. Total rounds is installed at 10.5 with the under priced to -360. The winning method odds are priced as follows:

Fulton by decision or technical decision: -135
Fulton by KO, TKO, DQ: +300
Figueroa by decision or technical decision: +700
Figueroa by KO, TKO, DQ: +450
Draw: +2500

The winner of this fight could stake a claim to challenge IBF and WBA champ Murodjon Akhmadaliev to unify the division. Of course, if we get a particularly competitive fight, this could also set up a rematch.

Round 1 10-9 Fulton

An almost easy round for the underdog, as the Philadelphian is forcing Figueroa to wrestle him in close to the point he was warned by referee Russell Mora for it. Both guys attempting to go to the body, but only one succeeded so far.

Round 2 10-9 Figueroa

Both fighters really go to the body here, but Figueroa spent most of the round charging forward and putting Fulton on the ropes. This looks like it’ll be a great one.

Round 3 10-9 Fulton

A terrific round, but the underdog got the best of it via some power punches. Mostly his upper cut that looks like if he gets a clean one it might be over in a hurry. It’s been a beauty so far.

Round 4 10-10

Fulton to the head, Figueroa to the body. It’s a really, really close fight, and we simply can’t pick a winner so far. Where any judge at ringside is sitting is going to affect how they score this. You can make a good case for either fighter right now.

Round 5 10-9 Figueroa

What a round! More of the same and mostly in close quarters, but the activity of Figueroa was just more as Fulton might be tiring just a touch. But both guys really technically solid.

Round 6 10-9 Figueroa

If you give this to Fulton, I do not object. But neither of these guys are landing with much power, and Figueroa simply has more activity. But again, it’s a really close fight in close quarters.

Round 7 10-9 Figueroa

They’re all very similar rounds at this point, and if you see it for Fulton I get it. Fulton seems to have a bit more power, and Figueroa more volume. It’s just all how you see it. If Fulton starts hitting with a bit more pop, we’ll score these for him.

Round 8 10-9 Fulton

Figureroa ALMOST stole the round in the last 20 seconds, but as we cross the 1000 total punches mark between both fighters, Fulton controlled it early. A showy flurry at the end for Figueroa, but not enough behind the punches and enough were countered to keep the round with Fulton.

Round 9 10-9 Fulton

Just more clean upper cuts on the inside from Fulton there in his most cleanly won round in quite awhile. Both guys are really going to the body, and the shots inside are dangerous if not powerful.

Round 10 10-9 Figueroa

With a minute left, it was Fulton who was getting the best of it inside. But then Figueroa starting with a huge flurry from the outside, stunning Fulton and backing him up more than once. We’re going for six more minutes, and who knows how this will be decided if it continues like this.

Round 11 10-9 Figueroa

Flip a coin? Figueroa was mostly going forward, but Fulton seemed to get the best of it on the inside with Figueroa winning when there was more distance. Here we go, three minutes to try and steal another point.

Round 12 10-9 Figueroa

It seemed like Fulton thought he won and wasn’t trying to get involved, while Figueroa threw more than 100 punches in the final round alone. An absolute battle, and however it is scored you can’t really argue. I have it 116-113 Figueroa, but if Fulton wins I’m absolutely ok with it. Just a heckuva fight.
