Early look at the 2021 Heisman Trophy odds

It’s never too early to be thinking about the futures betting market. Here’s a look at some of the top names to be thinking about before this season even ends.

The college football season isn’t even over yet, but the opening odds for the 2021 Heisman Trophy are already featured on DraftKings Sportsbook. These names and numbers should fluctuate quite a bit before the first snap of next year even takes place, but it’s never too early to take a look at the futures market.

Here are some early thoughts on some of the key names to watch for as potential winners of the next Heisman Trophy.

The favorites

Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler is the current favorite at +300 to win it next season, and it makes a lot of sense, as he played much better down the stretch leading the Sooners to another Big 12 title. The rest of the conference had a chance to knock the kings off their throne this season, but nobody stepped up and took advantage. This year marked the first season since 2015 when the Oklahoma quarterback wasn’t among the Heisman finalists. Lincoln Riley knows how to get quarterbacks into the Heisman conversation.

Clemson quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei checks in at No. 3 in the Heisman race with +650 odds, so you’ve got all offseason to practice the pronunciation of his last name. It would be quite the situation to see Trevor Lawrence never win a Heisman and Uiagalelei does it in Year 1 as a full-time starter, but it’s certainly possible. He appeared in several games this year in blowout wins, but Uiagalelei started two games against Notre Dame and Boston College and looked fantastic. In the two games combined, he completed 69.4% of his passes for 781 yards with four touchdowns and zero interceptions. He also rushed for two scores.

The sleepers

Auburn Tigers running back Tank Bigsby is a name that could draw some Heisman buzz. The Tigers need to get better as a team, and if they do, he should be closer to the Heisman than he is right now with the 14th best odds at +4000.

Florida Gators quarterback Emory Jones is surprisingly far down the list as the quarterback of a premier college football program. He is tied for 16th with several other players at +5000 odds. Florida is recruiting among the best teams in the sport, and it has the talent to reload year after year. Jones could be worth a wager.

The Long shot

Far down the list, you’ll find Ole Miss’ John Rhys Plumlee at +25000 odds. A backup quarterback this season, the athletic playmaker lined up at wide receiver in the bowl game due to the Rebels’ lack of depth at the position and put together a very good performance. He made some crucial plays and caught five passes for 73 yards in the game. Plumlee is behind Matt Corral on the QB depth chart, and Ole Miss just signed a four-star quarterback with Luke Altmyer. A potential switch to receiver might be in order, and this is a Rebels offense that’s going to score a ton of points under Lane Kiffin.
