What to do with Philip Rivers in the Wild Card round of the 2021 NFL playoffs

We go over the fantasy football and DFS outlook of Philip Rivers ahead of the Colts Wild Card matchup against the Bills in the 2021 NFL Playoffs.

After sneaking into the playoffs, the Indianapolis Colts will open their postseason play with a game against the high-flying Buffalo Bills, the AFC’s seventh and second seeds, respectively. To have a chance here, the underdog Colts will need a solid day from quarterback Philip Rivers. The question here is whether or not he can turn that into a viable fantasy contribution.

Fantasy Football analysis: Colts QB Philip Rivers, $5,400

Rivers finished the season with just two touchdowns in his last two games. He didn’t need to do much work in the season finale against Jacksonville, but the week before that, in a loss to the Steelers, he had just 270 yards and a pick to go with his passing score in that one.

The thing with Rivers in fantasy is that his ceiling isn’t high. His season-high for touchdown throws in a game is three, and he did that three times, two of those against bad teams. He did, however, manage to throw three touchdowns against the Packers. And if they’re going to keep pace with the Bills, he’ll have to aim for that ceiling again.

Indianapolis’ offense is going to run through Jonathan Taylor, but it’s important to note that the Bills defense is ranked 29th against quarterbacks. It’s setting up to be a decent day for Rivers, the kind where two touchdowns is a reasonable expectation.

Fantasy Start/Sit Recommendation

In traditional fantasy formats, Rivers is a decent enough play, if you don’t have one of the luxury options like Josh Allen. His $5,400 salary in DraftKings might be tempting for the budget minded, but I’d avoid him in DFS.
