The New York Knicks are planning on bringing back free agent PF Taj Gibson on a contract, The Athletic’s Shams Charania reported Thursday afternoon. Gibson spent last season with the Knicks after signing via free agency last offseason. He’s mostly being brought back for depth and because of his relationship with Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau. Gibson played under Thibs during his first head coaching stint with the Chicago Bulls from 2010-2015. Gibson also played under Thibs in Minnesota.

Gibson is familiar with Thibs’ system and the Knicks are dealing with some injuries in the front court. Nerlens Noel and rookie Obi Toppin have both missed time this season, so bringing in Gibson isn’t a bad insurance policy. Gibson can also teach the youngsters a thing or two having been around the League a while. He’s also a great locker room guy and the Knicks could use more of those at 5-3 and on the rise.

Gibson doesn’t move the needle much in terms of fantasy basketball. He doesn’t have value in any format really — unless the Knicks end up losing multiple front court bodies to long-term injuries.
