Report: Cavs expected to release or trade Kevin Porter Jr. following locker room incident

The Cleveland Cavaliers are bursting from the seams with young talent but one player could be headed out the door soon. Second-year wing Kevin Porter Jr. hasn’t played all season but is in danger of being cut or traded because of a locker room outburst he had on Monday, according to The Athletic’s Joe Vardon. Porter reportedly threw food after finding out that his locker was given to former Brooklyn Nets forward Taurean Prince.

Porter averaged 10 points 3.2 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game as a rookie and really started coming into his own in the back half of 2019-20. His recent legal troubles have kept him off the court this year though, and it appears like the character issues that hurt his draft stock so much will could lead to his stint in Cleveland ending prematurely.

I’m not sure whether Porter threw soup like former Cavs wing J.R. Smith did years ago, but it seems like his relationship with Cleveland’s management could be unsalvageable at this point. While he is one of the more talented young players the Cavs have it's unlikely that other teams will be willing to part with viable assets to bring in such a wild card who’s yet to prove himself as a consistent NBA contributor.

I can’t even speculate what teams could be interested in acquiring Porter via trade or following his release, as there’s no telling when he’ll touch the hardwood again. It’s probably better for every team to let the smoke clear at this point.
