College football rankings reactions heading into Week 5

There are some movers and some placeholders in the poll that haven’t even played a game yet. The Bizarro Season makes for some unusual polling results.

There are some movers and shakers in this week’s college football polls, and the differences in how those filling out a ballot are reacting to teams that have played and haven’t played means we’re all over the place.

The biggest mover up in the positive column was the Miami Hurricanes, who has looked outstanding with D’Eriq King at quarterback. Their 52-10 beatdown of the Florida State Seminoles on national TV saw them move to #8 in both samples: Up four spots in the AP Poll, and six in the USA Today Coaches Poll.

Heading the other way are the Oklahoma Sooners, who might have played themselves out of the College Football Playoff already thanks to blowing a 21-point lead at home to the Kansas State Wildcats. They’re still ranked, but from #3 to #18 in the AP sample, and from #3 to #16 via the coaches.

The Mississippi State Bulldogs enter at #16 in the AP and #14 in the Coaches thanks to their 44-34 upset of the defending national champion LSU Tigers in Death Valley. But college football rankings are a zero-sum game, and the Bayou Bengals dropped from sixth to 20th in the AP, and from fifth to 17th via USA Today.

Here are the college football rankings for September 27th and heading into Week 5.
