While the spotlight naturally follows Tom Brady and his myriad star weapons, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers also sport a capable defense that appears capable of taking the leap in 2020. The unit enters its second season under coordinator Todd Bowles, one of the NFL’s premier defensive minds and one its most creative play-callers. As expected, the Buccaneers rank above the league average in blitz rate and that has already produced solid sack and turnover numbers. That approach, along with the talent Tampa Bay possesses on that side of the ball, make them a compelling play in fantasy.
Fantasy Football analysis: Bucs D/ST
The Buccaneers D/ST started off 2020 on the wrong foot, giving up 28 points to Drew Brees and a shaky New Orleans Saints offense. Yet Tampa Bay bounced back well last Sunday at home against the Carolina Panthers, allowing just 17 points while forcing four turnovers and five sacks. That performance suggests that, at least against weaker opponents, the unit can handle its business.
And the Buccaneers draw the Broncos at the most opportune time. Journeyman Jeff Driskel will start under center in place of Drew Lock, who will miss multiple weeks with a strained AC joint in his throwing shoulder. Meanwhile, No. 1 wide receiver Courtland Sutton suffered a torn ACL last week and will miss the rest of the season. Add in a turf toe injury for lead running back Phillip Lindsay, and the stars couldn’t align much better for Tampa’s defense.
