Breaking: Georgia State game at Charlotte cancelled because of Covid positive tests, contact tracing. pic.twitter.com/8ka3mqYnFe— Jeff Schultz (@JeffSchultzATL) September 25, 2020
Both teams are 0-1 this season, with Georgia State losing to #19 Louisiana 34-31 last weekend, and Charlotte getting beat by Appalachian State 35-20 two weeks ago in Boone. Georgia State was a three-point favorite on the road before the stoppage.
This is the second straight week of a cancelation for Charlotte, who lost their game with the North Carolina Tar Heels for the same reason last week.
The epidemic of canceled games due to contact tracing and positive tests means this is going to keep happening, which is why when conferences such as the Mountain West attempt to play eight games in eight weeks, it seems quite ambitious. College campuses remain hot beds for the virus, there’s a limited amount of precautions athletic departments can take, and one game can cause downstream effects that last well into the season.
No matter how many leagues and teams decide to play this year, this is going to keep happening.
