Wednesday update: The Panthers have placed McCaffrey on the injured reserve list due to his high ankle sprain.. He will have to remain on the list a minimum of three weeks, but that fits in with his 4-to-6 week time line.
UPDATE 12:18 p.m.: Ian Rapoport is reporting McCaffrey has a high ankle sprain and will miss 4-to-6 weeks due to the injury.
The Carolina Panthers suffered a tough blow in Week 2, losing running back Christian McCaffrey to an ankle injury. His prognosis is not entirely clear, but Adam Schefter is reporting McCaffrey is expected to be sidelined “multiple weeks” due to the injury.
Mike Davis ($5,100) is McCaffrey’s backup, with Trenton Cannon third on the depth chart. The Panthers practice squad includes Reggie Bonafon. Davis had one carry for one yard in Week 2, marking his first carry of the season. He had 13 carries last season between the Panthers and Chicago Bears, and 112 carries the season before in Seattle. Cannon is primarily a special teams player.
The Panthers are likely to bring in a running back or two for a visit given the concerning lack of depth. The New York Giants are bringing in Devonta Freeman for a workout following Saquon Barkley’s season-ending injury. The Panthers might reach out to Freeman, but given the growing need around the league, the Giants might decide to not waste any time and get Freeman signed.
