UPDATE: The Giants announced Barkley has suffered a torn ACL. That will officially end his season.
The New York Giants lost running back Saquon Barkley to a knee injury in Week 2, and the team believes it is a torn ACL. If that shows up in an MRI on Monday, Barkley will be done for the season. That will leave the Giants with running backs Dion Lewis and Wayne Gallman on their active roster and Sandro Platzgummer and Rod Smith on their practice squad.
The team is bringing in Devonta Freeman for a visit this week, according to Ian Rapoport. He will get a workout in after spending the weekend meeting with the Philadelphia Eagles. Prior to that, Freeman had met with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Seattle Seahawks following his release by the Atlanta Falcons.
Freeman struggled in 2019 to the tune of 656 yards on 3.6 yards per carry. He missed 14 games the previous season due to a groin injury. He last surpassed 1,000 yards rushing in 2016. If he signed with the Giants, he would be someone to monitor, but not necessarily worth rostering for the time being if you don’t have a clear open spot on your fantasy roster.
Dion Lewis has never been a workhorse back, serving more as a passing down weapon than a traditional between the tackles option. He led the New England Patriots in rushing attempts in 2017, finishing with 180 carries to Mike Gillislee’s 104 carries. Lewis is not a great waiver addition in many standard leagues, but his PPR value is growing with Barkley out for the year.
