Monday update: Shanahan told the media on Monday that Garoppolo’s high ankle sprain isn’t serious and he has a chance at playing this week, per Rob Lowder. He’s week-to-week for the time being.

Post-game update: Kyle Shanahan said that Jimmy Garoppolo suffered a high ankle sprain. That usually means multiple games missed, so Nick Mullens is likely to start in Week 3 against the New York Giants.

UPDATE: Jimmy Garoppolo has been ruled OUT with an ankle injury. Nick Mullens takes over as the team’s starting quarterback in the third quarter against the Jets. Garoppolo finished the game 14 of 16 for 131 yards and two touchdowns.

3rd quarter update: Jimmy Garoppolo did not come out for the third quarter while getting x-rays. Backup Nick Mullens is warming up on the sideline as Jets offense is on the field to open the second half.

2nd quarter update: Garoppolo returned to the game but appears to be a bit gimpy still. He has completed all 7 of his passes for 59 yards midway through the second quarter.

The San Francisco 49ers are hoping they dodged a bullet in Week 2 against the New York Jets. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo took a sack to close out a drive and after Quinnen Williams got to him, Garoppolo came up gimpy.

The 49ers QB limped off the field and was looked at by trainers. It appears to be an ankle issue and trainers are wrapping it, according to reporter Jennifer Lee Chan.
