With a few more games being postponed or canceled, college football has 20 games on its schedule for Week 3 with one on Friday night and 19 throughout the day on Saturday. As we’ve seen through the first few weeks, this number could easily change as we get closer to kickoff.
The best game
This is an easy one. For the best game of Week 3, we’ll head to ABC’s prime time matchup between the Miami Hurricanes and Louisville Cardinals. This will be the first game of the 2020 college football season featuring a pair of ranked teams. Louisville comes in at No. 18, while the Hurricanes are ranked 17th in the latest AP poll.
Last year, Louisville was among the most improved teams in college football in Scott Satterfield’s first year as the head coach, going from a two-win team in 2018 to an eight-win squad last season, which was capped off with a win in the Music City Bowl.
Miami brought in an exciting transfer in quarterback D’Eriq King from the Houston Cougars. He is a dual-threat QB who is listed among the Heisman contenders. He rushed for 83 yards and threw 144 yards and finished with a rushing touchdown and a throwing touchdown.
Both teams are coming into this game 1-0 on the season. Oddsmakers are expecting a close game with the Cardinals favored by 2.5 points at home according to DraftKings Sportsbook, so be in your most ideal college football viewing location at 7:30 p.m. ET.
Sleeper game
While plenty of attention will be on the Miami-Louisville game on Saturday night for good reason, one potential appetizer is the UCF Knights heading on the road to play the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. This game will get started at 3:30 p.m. ET on ABC, so you won’t even have to change the channel for the nightcap.
UCF is finally playing its first game of the season as one of the best Group of 5 teams the past few years. While UCF is more of an established program, Georgia Tech is in its second year transitioning out of the triple-option offense and pulled off an outright victory as double-digit underdogs against the Florida State Seminoles last weekend. Georgia Tech was projected to be one of the worst teams in the ACC, but it’s possible the second year under Geoff Collins is ahead of schedule.
Worst game
Let’s face it. This has the feeling of another weekend where we’re just waiting for the big boys to start playing. Fortunately, we’re about a week away from the SEC returning. By all means, go ahead and watch all the college football games you so desire this weekend, but there are plenty that can be avoided including this one.
The final game of the day is Abilene Christian Wildcats, an FCS team, taking on the UTEP Miners, which could possibly be the worst FBS team currently playing this college football season. UTEP is coming in 1-1 with a victory over Stephen F. Austin in which it trailed 14-3 late in the third quarter. The Miners followed it up with a 59-3 loss to the Texas Longhorns, allowing 45 points in the first half. This game is being aired on ESPN3 at 9 p.m. ET on Saturday, but feel free to avoid this one.
