In a class currently championed by Peter Yan, Randy Costa and Journey Newson will battle in a bantamweight brawl this Saturday at Las Vegas’ UFC Apex and live on ESPN+. The fight will be part of the preliminary card for UFC Vegas 11.

Costa will take to the octagon with a 5-1 record with five KO stoppages and a submission loss, and a 1-1 record in the UFC. He’ll enter the bout with a 73-inch reach, six more than Newson. All six of his MMA bouts have come in the past two years, but he has yet to fight in 2020. Costa is an uber-aggressive fighter, connecting on 46 percent of his strikes and landing 8.05 significant strikes per minute. He takes 5.56 and defends 57 percent of his opponent’s strikes. “The Zohan” is just 26 and is looking to become the next bantamweight star.

Journey Newson is 31-years-old and 9-2 in MMA, with three wins via knockout, three via submission and three decisions. Newson’s only fight in 2020 was a no contest, his 38-second knockout of Domingo Pilarte overturned by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation for a failed drug test. A good defender, he deflecting 66 percent of his opponent’s significant strikes, landing 2.81 per minute with 33 percent accuracy himself. The orthodox-stance fighter will will be giving up size, but with an average match time of under eight minutes, Newson also may not plan on this being a long bout.

Both get their fights over quickly, so it’d be shocking to see this one go the distance.
