Quarterbacks are expected to dominate the 2020 NFL season’s MVP race, and there are quite a few players capable of winning the prestigious award. The league’s last two MVP winners are this year’s betting favorites, and we’ll go over frontrunners on DraftKings Sportsbook here.
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was favored at +400 before Week 1 and has jumped to +300 after having an underwhelming Week 1 performance. While Mahomes threw for three scores, he only tallied 211 passing yards. The rich got richer in Kansas City when Offensive Rookie of the Year frontrunner Clyde Edwards-Helaire joined the team. If the Chiefs continue to focus on the ground game, Mahomes could have lower passing numbers than usual. He’ll face the elite secondary of the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 2, and dominating them could help his odds improve. The 2018 MVP has the most loaded offense in the NFL and is looking to repeat as a Super Bowl champion, which gives him a sizable edge.
Reigning MVP Lamar Jackson had the third best odds at +700 before Week 1 and saw his odds move to +500 after throwing for 275 yards and three scores against the Cleveland Browns in Week 1. The dual-threat signal caller also rushed for 45 yards but didn’t have to do much of that in the Baltimore Raven’s blowout win. He broke the NFL record for most rushing yards by a quarterback in 2019 and also led the league with 36 passing touchdowns. His defense could put him in a great position to score a lot of points. Jackson could run the score up in Week 2 against a Houston Texans team that forked up 34 points to the Chiefs in Week 1.
Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson moved from second in the standings at +700 to third at +600 after ripping off 322 passing yards and throwing for four touchdowns against the Falcons’ porous defense. Mr.Unlimited is elite when it comes to throwing the long ball but has athleticism that lets him get things done on the ground as well. he’ll match up against reigning Defensive Player of the Year Stephon Gilmore and the New Englands Patriots in Week 2, and that could prove to be a real test for Wilson.
Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray and Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers are knotted at +1400 and have the fourth best odds. Murray leaped +2500 for a reason. He tore up the San Francisco 49ers defense by throwing for 230 yards and a score while also rushing for 91 yards and a score. He enjoyed using his new weapon DeAndre Hopkins and connected with the wideout 14 times for 151 yards. Murray could prove that he’s comparable to the best dual-threat quarterbacks in the league if he’s capable of pulling off performances like the one he had in Week 1 consistently. The budding defensive line of the Washington Football team is waiting for Murray in Week 2. We’ll see if he has the chops to avoid Chase Young and company to get a win.
People counted Rodgers out because of his weak receiving corps behind Davante Adams, so his odds were at +3000 ahead of Week 1. He responded by hurling the pigskin for 364 yards and four touchdowns against the Minnesota Vikings. All three of his top receivers scored, and Adams totaled 14 receptions for 156 yards and two touchdowns. Only Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan has thrown for more yards (450), and Rodgers could bolster his numbers by lighting up the Detroit Lions in Week 2.
