Breaking down the cut line for the 2020 Safeway Open

FINAL UPDATE: The cut line is -5.

The PGA Tour kicked off a new season on Thursday in Napa, California with the 2020 Safeway Open. The second round is getting underway this morning, with the first golfers teeing off at 7 a.m. PT. However, 13 golfers have to wrap up their first round after Thursday play was suspended due to darkness.

Russell Knox heads into the second round with a one-shot lead after shooting -9 in the first round. Sam Burns, Cameron Percy, and Bo Hoag are tied for second at -8, and Brendan Steele and Pat Perez are tied for fifth at -7.

The field contains 156 golfers, and upwards of half the field could be eliminated by the end of Friday’s second round. We’ll be tracking the cut line over the course of the day to see who makes it into the weekend and who is headed home.

How is the cut line determined?

The cut line at 36 holes is the top 65 players plus those tied at the end of that group. Some tournaments will have a second cut after day three (54 holes) if that initial group is 78 total players, but the Safeway Open does not appear to have that.

What is the cut line for the Safeway Open?

8:52 p.m.: The cut line moved to -5. There are 67 golfers currently inside the cut line.

8:34 p.m.: The cut line remains at -4. There are 80 golfers currently inside the cut line.

6:53 p.m.: The cut line remains at -4. There are 75 golfers currently inside the cut line.

5:49 p.m.: The cut line has climbed to -4 with the last golfers having teed off. 67 golfers are currently inside the cut line.

3:12 p.m.: The cut line remains at -3 with the back half of the field starting to tee off. There are currently 73 players inside the cut line.

1:24 p.m.: The cut line has moved to -3 with half the field left to tee off. There are currently 69 players inside the cut line.

The cut line will not start to formally appear until the 13 first round golfers complete their last few holes. However, based on where everyone is position, the cut line will likely open at -2. There are currently 80 golfers who would make it through. Three golfers at -2 are on the 17th hole to close out their first round. Even if all three bogeyed the hole, the cut line would still open at -2.

Who is not projected to make the cut?

8:34 p.m.: Jordan Spieth, Brandt Snedeker, and Ryan Armour all finished the day -1 for the tournament.

6:53 p.m.: Shane Lowry bogeyed to drop out of the cut and is at -3.

5:49 p.m.: Bill Haas, Phil Mickelson, Kevin Tway, Sepp Straka, C.T. Pan, and Jhonattan Vegas are all at -3 with the back nine to go.

3:12 p.m.: Wyndham Clark is at -1 thanks to a double bogey

1:24 p.m.: KJ Choi is even through 8 holes leaving him at +2 for the day. Robby Shelton and Hunter Mahan are +1 on the day to also sit at +2 for the tournament.

Phil Mickelson opens Friday at -1, while Sergio Garcia and Jim Furyk sit at even. Bill Haas, Brandt Snedeker, and Jordan Spieth are all at +1. None are part of the group of 13 still to finish their first round.
