Post Positions for the 2020 Kentucky Derby

The Run for the Roses will feel a bit different this year, but there’s one horse that will still have a shot at history.

It’s not the first Saturday in May, and instead of over 100,000 people in various states of inebriation across the grandstand and sprawling infield, a mere 23,000 will be allowed to witness the most-exciting two minutes in sports. But it’s still the Kentucky Derby, and this Saturday at 7:01 p.m. the best three-year olds in thoroughbred racing will attempt to make history.

One of them seems well on the way to immortality in Tiz The Law, the Belmont Stakes winner that cruised to victory by 3 3/4-lengths in what is usually the final jewel of the Triple Crown series. Since then he’s won the Travers Stakes at Saratoga since by 5 1/2 just a month ago, and with six wins in seven career starts and over $2 million in earnings already he’s the horse the entire field will be watching.

Second-favorite Art Collector, who won the Blue Grass Stakes and the Ellis Park Derby in the run-up to Louisville, has been scratched from the field. During a training run the horse “nicked the bulb of his left front heel with a hind hoof while galloping Monday at Churchill Downs” and won’t be able to race because an anti-inflammatory can’t be issued this close to post time.

It makes the path for the chalk that much easier, which explains the 3/5 morning line price despite drawing a very tough post position. But with co-favorites Honor A.P. and Authentic also breaking from distance, the favorites should be able to see each other to the first turn.
