A ranked-and-rising middleweight takes on a former UFC champion that’s struggled as of late when Omari Akhmedov takes on Chris Weidman at UFC Fight Night this Saturday from Las Vegas on ESPN+.
Akhmedov is 8-3-1 in the UFC, and 20-4-1 overall as an MMA fighter. The Dagestani native is 5-0-1 in his last six outings, but has yet to step foot in the octagon in 2020. His 2.99 strikes per minute and 2.40 takedowns per 15 minutes shows his balance as a fighter, as does the seven KO’s and five submission wins on his resume. He’s taken home Fight of The Night honors twice in the UFC, and is ranked #11 in the middleweight division as of now.
Weidman has seen the highest of highs and lowest of lows in his 11-year MMA career. Five years ago he had a perfect record of 13-0 with two stoppage wins over Anderson Silva and one over Vitor Belfort, and was the UFC middleweight champion. Now he’s lost five of his last six bouts with all five losses coming by KO or TKO. The 36-year-old former Hofstra All-American wrestler was one of the biggest stars in UFC, but now likely needs a win just to stay a part of the promotion. In his last fight against Dominick Reyes in October of last year, he was knocked out in just 103 seconds via eight total strikes.
