A pair of Top 10 ranked heavyweights that would love a chance at the UFC heavyweight championship are the main event at UFC Fight Night on August 8th when Derrick Lewis takes on Aleksei Oleinik on ESPN. The winner will be in the mix for the title that will be decided the next week between Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier.
Lewis goes by the moniker “The Black Beast” and has a 14-5 record in the UFC, and a 23-7-1 record as an MMA fighter. His exciting style has led to 18 knockout wins and one via submission in his career, and he enters with the #4 ranking in the division. Despite only landing 2.53 significant strikes per round, and a takedown less than every 30 minutes of octagon time, his overwhelming power gets stoppages as soon as he connects. With wins over Francis Ngannou and Alexander Volkov, he can lay claim to a title shot with a win here.
Oleinik is one of the most experienced fighters in mixed martial arts history with a 59-13-1 record at age 43. “The Boa Constrictor” from Moscow has an 8-4 mark in the UFC, with six submissions and a knockout in the promotion, as well as five Performance of The Night bonuses. He’s one of the most exciting fighters in the company, and will want to use his mat skills against a striker. He lands 3.72 strikes per minute, and a gaudy 2.41 takedowns per 15 minutes in the octagon.
