The 2020 US Open gets underway on Monday, August 31st at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queen, New York at Flushing Meadows. There was concern in the spring the tournament would be postponed or canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but it will get going as planned. There are quite a few notable players absent, including defending women’s champ Bianca Andreescu have withdrawn due to the pandemic, but some big names remain in the field.

The tournament organizers unveiled the women’s draw earlier this week, and the first round will take place this coming Monday and Tuesday. Karolina Pliskova is the top seed and will open against Anhelina Kalinina. No. 2 seed Sofia Kenin is the highest seeded American in the tournament and will face Yanina Wickmayer to open the tournament.

The women’s field has taken a significant hit from Covid-related withdrawals. Six of the top ten players in the world are skipping the tournament this year. They include No. 1 Ashleigh Barty, No. 2 Simona Halep, No. 5 Elina Svitolina, No. 6 Bianca Andreescu, No. 7 Kiki Bertens, and No. 8 Belinda Bencic.

Serena Williams entered the tournament ranked 9th in the world, but will be the No. 3 seed due to the withdrawals. She is looking to win her seventh US Open title and first since 2014, and will open against Kristie Ahn.
