UPDATE: The 49ers formally placed Jalen Hurd on injured reserve due to his knee injury.
The San Francisco 49ers appear to have lost their second wide receiver to a significant injury. Deebo Samuel suffered to a broken foot over the offseason that will likely carry into the season, and now it appears Jalen Hurd could be lost for the season. Hurd suffered a knee injury in practice on Sunday, and there is concern it is a torn ACL, according to NFL Network.
Hurd impressed a year ago in his rookie year training camp before a back injury placed him on injured reserve. When Samuel went down, Hurd was expected to benefit, but now he too could be gone. The 49ers signed Tavon Austin and J.J. Nelson last week, and are bringing in Jaron Brown for a workout.
The 49ers wide receiver depth chart has taken some big hits this offseason with the losses of Samuel and Hurd. The team invested a first round pick in Brandon Aiyuk, and his stock will climb with the Hurd injury. Kendrick Bourne, Dante Pettis, Trent Taylor, and Richie James (once he gets off the NFI list) will all be competing for opportunities along with Austin and Nelson.
There’s upside in Kyle Shanahan’s offense, but it’s tough to tell if any of these receivers is worth more than a late-round flyer in re-draft leagues. Aiyuk has considerable dynasty value, while Samuel is still valuable if he can get back from his broken foot.
