UEFA Champions League quarterfinal preview: RB Leipzig vs. Atlético Madrid

Two sides that have already qualified for the 2021 version of the competition try to win it in 2020.

It’s a pair of third-place sides from two of the top leagues in Europe facing off with a spot in the UEFA Champions League semifinals on the line as RB Leipzig of Germany takes on Atlético Madrid today in Lisbon at the Estadio Jose Alvalade. The match starts at 3 p.m. ET and will air on CBS All-Access.

Leipzig, who certainly aren’t the most popular club in Fussball-mad Deutschland, advanced past the group stage of the competition for the first time. Timo Werner is no longer with the club, having transferred to Chelsea after scoring an astonishing 28 goals in 34 Bundesliga matches this season. His absence will make RB an underdog, but the club basically owned by the Red Bull energy drink company will still try and go forward. But it will be a much tougher lift today than their 4-0 aggregate domination of Tottenham Hotspur to advance to today’s match.

Atlético Madrid aren’t exactly known for their attacking flair, but manager Diego Simeone tends to get the most he can out of his side every season. In 38 La Liga matches this season, they scored only 51 times and conceded 27, but still ended up in third place thanks to their commitment to defense. It can be plodding, but if Los Rojiblancos can find a set piece they’re as dangerous as any club in the world. Spaniard Álvaro Morata is their most dangerous attacking piece, and England’s Kieran Trippier anchors their stout backline.
