Capitals-Islanders opener delayed to 4:40 p.m. due to Bruins-Hurricanes 2OT game

The Bruins and Hurricanes are heading into a second extra frame and that will push back the start time of Washington and New York.

UPDATE 3:12 p.m.: The puck will drop at 4:04 p.m. ET, according to NBC Sports Washington.

UPDATE 2:52 p.m.: Welp, that was quick. Patrice Bergeron scored at the 1:13 mark to win it 4-3 in double overtime.

Welcome to TorontOT! A day after the Tampa Bay Lightning and Columbus Blue Jackets went five overtime frames, the Boston Bruins and Carolina Hurricanes are headed to double OT with the game tied 3-3. This in turn is delaying the start of the Washington Capitals and New York Islanders.

The Bruins and Hurricanes were scheduled to play at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, but the game was delayed due to the Lightning-Blue Jackets marathon. The NHL is using two hub cities, and only rink in each city. That means one game has to wait for the previous game to finish. It got so late on Tuesday, the NHL elected to move Bruins-Canes to 11 a.m. on Wednesday.

Caps-Islanders was scheduled for 3 p.m., but now that will be moved back an indefinite amount of time. Once the Bruins-Hurricanes game ends, they’ll have to get the zamboni out and clean up the ice. It will be a relatively quick turnaround, but it won’t be instant, so Caps-Islanders will be delayed at least 30 minutes, if not longer.
