Breaking down Wednesday’s NHL playoff schedule

The 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs got underway Tuesday afternoon, and we had a marathon right out of the gate. The Tampa Bay Lightning and Columbus Blue Jackets were the first game to start, with the puck dropping at 3 p.m., but it did not wrap until nearly 10 p.m. The game went into five overtimes, with the Lightning winning 3-2 a minute before it became the longest game in modern NHL history.

The length of the game coupled with the hub city model resulted in the Bruins-Hurricanes 8 p.m. game getting moved to Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. The move gives us five games on Wednesday, with the evening planned to wrap with Canucks vs. Blues at 10:30 p.m.

Caps center Lars Eller is wrapping up his quarantine and won’t play in Game 1, while defenseman John Carlson is a game-time decision. The Islanders expect to have Johnny Boychuk back in the lineup for the game, per beat writer Andrew Gross.

The Avalanche have not announced their starting goaltender between Philipp Grubauer and Pavel Francouz. Arizona will start Darcy Kuemper in goal, but will be without backup Antti Raanta. Adin Hill will serve as the backup.

The Flyers got forward Jakub Voracek back in practice on Tuesday, but would not comment on his availability for Game 1, per reporter Stephen Whyno.

The Blues are -150 favorites to win the game, and are getting 68 percent of the handle and 72 percent of total bets. Blues reserve forward Sammy Blais did not practice on Monday, per reporter Tom Timmerman, while the Canucks will be without reserve forwards Tyler Toffoli and Micheal Ferland, per broadcaster Brendan Batchelor.
