The Stanley Cup Playoffs have arrived! The puck drops for the first round of the playoffs on August 12th, and while it might be four months later than expected, it’s better than nothing!
The NHL wrapped up the qualifying round over the weekend and we have the bracket set for the playoffs. The Boston Bruins landed the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference in round robin play, while the Carolina Hurricanes beat the New York Rangers in the qualifying round to claim the No. 5 seed.
The Bruins won the Atlantic Division in the shortened regular season and claimed the Presidents’ Trophy for most points entering round robin play. However, Boston lost all three of its round robin games to finish fourth. Goalie Tuuka Rask struggled in his two starts, giving up five goals. He said after the team’s loss in the finale that he thinks it was a matter of getting the rust off and “[n]ow we start the real hockey,” per NBC Sports Boston.
The Hurricanes were the 6th seed in the Eastern Conference qualifying round, facing the 11th seeded Rangers. Carolina swept New York in short order, giving up four goals in the process. Petr Mrazek impressed in goal, giving up 1.33 goals per game in his three starts. The team is not sure if starting defenseman Dougie Hamilton will be available after suffering an undisclosed injury in July, according to reporter Dan Rosen.
