Agent: Liz Cambage expected to opt out of 2020 WNBA season

UPDATE Sun, July 5th 10:55 a.m.: Cambage’s agent confirmed to the Associated Press that the Aces’ star is expected to sit out the season due to Covid-related health concerns.

“In the evaluation of Liz Cambage’s health and pre-existing risk factors with her team doctor, we believe her to be at high-risk for severe illness if she contracts COVID-19 in participating this WNBA season,” Cambage’s agent, Allison Galer, told The Associated Press on Saturday night. “We are awaiting the league’s determination based on an independent physician panel.”

The WNBA is opening their season later this month, and Las Vegas Aces star Liz Cambage is not expected to be playing. The Aces signed center Avery Warley-Talbert on Saturday, and reporter Howard Megdal is hearing that means Cambage will opt out of the 2020 season.

Cambage is the Aces starting center and coming off a strong debut season for the team. Las Vegas acquired the star from Dallas following the 2018 season. In her first season in Las Vegas, she scored 15.9 points per game, grabbed 8.2 rebounds per game, and blocked 1.5 shots per game over 32 games.

This is the second big blow to the Aces heading into the abbreviated 2020 season. Last month, Kelsey Plum tore her Achilles tendon and is out for the season. The Aces were one of the favorites to win the WNBA title this season, but these two big blows might just end their chances before they even get started.
