FINAL UPDATE: The final cut line is -2
The PGA Tour teed off the second round of the 2020 3M Open on Friday at 7:50 a.m. ET after a Thursday full of low scores atop the leaderboard. Richy Werenski finished the first round in first place at -9, with Michael Thompson a shot back, and seven golfers another shot back. Early favorite Tony Finau was included in that last group.
The second round is underway with the early golfers a third way of the way through the course. Half the field tees off by 9:50 a.m., and then the second half of the field starts teeing off at 1 p.m. We have a long ways to go before the cut is determined today. Potentially over half the field will be cut by the end of Friday, setting the field for the final two rounds.
How is the cut line determined?
The cut line at 36 holes is the top 65 players plus those tied at the end of that group. Some tournaments will have a second cut after day three (54 holes) if that initial group is 78 total players, but the 3M Open does not appear to have that.
What is the cut line for the 3M Open?
7:22 p.m.: The cut line remains at -2, with 67 golfers making the cut. Three golfers remain on the course at -1.
6:22 p.m.: The projected cut line remains at -2, with 67 golfers currently making it, and everybody into the back nine.
5:15 p.m.: The projected cut line moved to -2, with 66 golfers currently making it.
4:15 p.m.: The projected cut line is back down to -1, with 89 golfers currently making it.
2:50 p.m.: The projected cut line has moved to -2. The final 12 players to tee off will do so over the next ten or so minutes.
1:05 p.m.: The projected cut line remains at -1 with the second half of the field starting to tee off.
11:27 a.m.: The projected cut line remains at -1. The first half of the field is entirely on the course, and the second half will get going in about 90 minutes.
As of 9:10 a.m. on Friday, the cut line is -1 and 80 golfers are projected to make the cut. 23 golfers are currently at -1, and another 19 are at even. The morning tee times close this hour, and the afternoon tee times start at 1 p.m.
Who is not projected to make the cut?
6:22 p.m.: Brooks Koepka remains at -1 and on the final hole of the day. Aaron Wise finished at -1, Tommy Fleetwood is even and on the final hole, and Doc Redman has dropped to even with two holes to go.
5:15 p.m.: Brooks Koepka had a bogey to drop to even, but just birdied No. 14 to get back to -1. Bubba Watson, Ricky Barnes, and Jhonattan Vegas all finished the day at -1.
4:15 p.m.: Brooks Koepka remains at -1 overall through 10 holes on Friday. Charles Howell III added another birdie to sit at -4 through 10. Ryan Armour, Wyndham Clark, and Troy Merritt are among the golfers at even after completing their Friday round.
2:50 p.m.: Charles Howell III is scorching and is on the right side of the cut now. Brooks Koepka is even for the round so far and remains -1 for the tournament, while back-to-back bogeys have Doc Redman moving in the wrong direction.
1:05 p.m.: Some players at even starting to tee off include Charles Howell III, Si Woo Kim, Tommy Fleetwood, and Tom Lehman. Some notable -1s starting to tee off include Brooks Koepka, Bill Haas, and Doc Redman.
11:27 a.m.: Luke List has collapsed on the front nine with three bogey and a triple bogey to put him at +5 for the round and +2 for the tournament. Vaughn Taylor and Jhonattan Vegas are both struggling as well, sitting at +3 for the tournament through the front nine.
We saw some rough first round performances by Paul Casey, Hunter Mahan, and Luke Donald. Casey is on the course with a bogey after going +1 on Thursday. Mahan and Donald are part of the afternoon tee times. Dustin Johnson put up a +7 on Thursday, but withdrew after the round due to a back injury.
