Here we go again.
When asking fighters to take fights on short notice and on the other side of the world, complications can be expected. But one fight is off and two more will see partial purse forfeitures at UFC on ESPN 13 tomorrow night as both middleweight Abdul Razak Alhassan and featherweight Chris Fishgold came in four pounds over the limit in their divisions.
Another fight was scrapped completely, as undefeated and favored Kenneth Bergh was declared medically unfit to compete following his weight cut to 205 for light heavyweight, and his bout with Jorge Gonzalez is canceled.
Alhassan will still face UFC newcomer Mounir Lazzez, who gains 20% of the purse of his opponent. Lazzez is a +260 underdog to to the -345 favorite Alhassan, making his first appearance in almost two years after sexual assault charges were dismissed against him at trial.
Fishgold is now a +120 underdog after opening at +115 vs. the favored Jared “Flash” Gordon who is now -150. Fishgold will also be conceding 20% of his winnings to his opponent for the miss.
UFC President Dana White has made his opinions on missing weight pretty clear, and for fighters that are on the cusp this can’t be good for their long-term prospects. But as we’ve seen in the past, if you win, you stay. So this could all be forgotten after the final bell tomorrow night.
