RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner has been one of the most exciting players in the Bundesliga this season, and the forward could have a new home soon. According to ESPN, Chelsea is nearing a deal with the 24-year-old after agreeing to activate his £49 million release clause.

Liverpool sits atop the English Premier League Table with 82 points and was long considered the favorite to land the German star, but fourth place Chelsea has jumped the line. Werner is close to finalizing a five-year contract with the Blues worth £200,000 a week and could replace Tammy Abraham as their top goal scorer in the near future.

Teams have until June 15th to make offers for Werner, and the EPL resumes play on June 17th. Third place Leipzig didn’t have much of a chance to win the Bundesliga with Werner, and its chances without him down the stretch aren’t promising.

Werner ranks second in the Bundesliga with 25 goals this term and only trails Robert Lewandowski’s mark of 29.
