The PGA Tour is back next week when the Charles Schwab Challenge kicks off at Colonial Country Club in Forth Worth. The tournaments gets underway on Thursday, June 11th, airing on the Golf Channel and CBS. This is the first PGA Tour tournament of the 2019-2020 season since play was suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Rory McIlroy leads the field of 140 golfers as the +750 betting favorite at DraftKings Sportsbook. Other short odds include Jon Rahm (+900), Justin Thomas (+1400), and Webb Simpson (+1800).
The return of golf brings with it the return of daily fantasy golf! DraftKings will be offering contests throughout the week, including Classic style for the whole contest and Showdown style for the weekend rounds and individual rounds. For the time being, they’ve posted pricing for their classic contests, which include a Millionaire game.
Below is a full rundown of prices. As we get into tournament week there will be plenty more here and at Playbook, but we wanted to take an early look at the pricing. It’s no surprise the top ten in betting odds make up most of the top ten of salaries. Rory is the most productive golfer in DFS this season thanks to six top five finishes, so it’s no surprise he leads the pack in salary.
The roster salary cap is $50,000, which means a six-golfer lineup provides you with $8,333 per golfer. If you want a McIlroy or Rahm in your lineup, you’ll need to find some value down the list. Kevin Na at $7,600 is worth a look in spite of missing three cuts and only securing two top tens in 12 tournaments this season. Na won the Charles Schwab Challenge last year, and finished fourth the year before in the same tournament that was called the Fort Worth Invitational. Past performance is not necessarily indicative of future returns, but he would seem to be finding his groove at Colonial.
Another potential value is Andrew Putnam at $6,800. Last year at Colonial he finished tied for third, and the year before he finished tied for 20th. If you included Na and Putnam on your roster, you can then average $8,900 for each of your four remaining golfers. Of course, there’s a good chance one or both is a fairly popular pick given their recent performance. That doesn’t mean avoid them, but you have to decide where is best to go contrarian and where is best to potentially follow the pack.
