Monchengladbach to secure Champions League football against Hertha Berlin
In sports, history has a way of repeating itself. Last season, Borussia Monchengladbach looked set to finish fourth and qualify for the Champions League. However, on the final day of the 2018/19 campaign, Leverkusen stole the fourth spot from them. Guess what? Monchengladbach is currently fourth, two points ahead of Leverkusen. They can still steal the fourth spot again if they beat Mainz, who are now safe. Monchengladbach will host Hertha Berlin who also has nothing to play for. Could Leverkusen break Monchengladbach’s hearts for the second successive season? Monchengladbach knows that if they win, they will be playing against the best teams in Europe next season. Monchengladbach has not beaten Hertha in the last three meetings and the first encounter this season ended in a goalless draw. Another 0-0 draw could be enough to qualify for the Champions League if Leverkusen lose. Monchengladbach and Hertha match up well in terms of over 2.5 total goals (-295).
Over Monchengladbach’s last five home games, they’ve seen three or more total goals scored while Hertha’s last away game was a 2-1 defeat at Freiburg. Monchengladbach forward Lars Stindl ($9,000) is ending the season in great form with an average of 22.6 DFS points per game in his last two games courtesy of the three goals. Jonas Hofmann ($7,200) is averaging 28 points in his last two matches and will be looking to sign off in style with another productive match. Hertha has their own in-form players like Dodi Lukebakio ($5,300). The midfielder earned 21.5 fantasy points last week with a goal and an assist in Berlin’s 2-0 win at home to Leverkusen. Krzysztof Piatek ($5,600) is one of the best-valued players in this contest and after scoring 17.5 DFS points last week, he deserves to be considered in your lineup.
Prediction: Over 2.5 total goals (-295)
Werder to be relegated despite beating Cologne
The curtain comes down on the 2019/20 season this weekend, but Werder Bremen hope their home game with Cologne is not their final game of the campaign. Bremen manager Florian Kohfeldt’s only hope for his side to avoid slipping out of the top flight is to claim the relegation playoff spot currently occupied by Fortuna Dusseldorf, who have a two-point cushion over Werder. I can see wins for both Dusseldorf at Union Berlin and for Werder because their opponents have nothing to play for. If both Dusseldorf and Werder win, the latter will join Paderborn as the two sides automatically relegated from the Bundesliga while Dusseldorf lives to fight another day.
Cologne beat Werder in the reverse fixture thanks to a John Cordoba goal six minutes before half-time. Bremen have been featured in more Bundesliga seasons than any other club and have no choice but to approach this final game with a gung-ho approach if they are to stay in the league. I would expect them to start fast against a Cologne side that is without a win in their last nine games. Cologne has been fun to watch for the majority of the season. Their games either have had three or more total goals scored (14 of their last 16) and/or both teams to score (their last 10). Neither match up well with Werder, who have failed to score in three of their last five. However, they have to score in this contest while trying to register their first shutout in six league games. An early goal will ease a little of the pressure the players may be facing, but they haven’t scored first in their last 11 home games or led at half-time in their last 12 at home. As for players to shine for Werder, I expect midfielder Davy Klassen ($5,800) to add to his two goals and an assist in his last three games to average 14.6 DFS points in those matches which are the same return for Yuya Osako ($6,600). He is ending the season in top form with two goals in his last three appearances. For Cologne, Florian Kainz ($6,500) could score big points and add to his penalty from last week’s game while John Cordoba ($5,800) needs two goals to finish the season with 15 goals.
Prediction: Werder Bremen to score first (-225)
Other players to consider on DraftKings
With a lot of issues already settled, be cautious when it comes to drafting your squad from the Bundesliga this weekend. Managers may use this final game of the season to give fringe players a run out to see if they deserve to be a part of the team next season. And for some players, this will be their last game in their current team’s colors so they will want to say goodbye on a high note. Timo Werner ($8,900) looks set to be leaving RB Leipzig for EPL side Chelsea next season and has said he does not want to play for Leipzig in the Champions League when it returns in August. Werner will finish the season second in the goalscoring charts to Robert Lewandowski ($11,500) who is seven goals ahead of the Leipzig striker. Since the restart, Lewandowski has been involved in more goals than any other player (eight goals and one assist). Werner has not scored against Augsburg since March 2017 and this is a chance for him to change that. Augsburg’s Florian Niederlechner ($6,000) scored in the first meeting which Leipzig won 3-1 and Niederlechner scored last week at Dusseldorf for the second time in three games. Eintracht Frankfurt’s Bas Dost ($7,100) will be a targeted man when he lines up against relegated Paderborn. Dost has two goals in his last three games and he also scored in the reverse meeting this season. Teammate Andre Silva ($8,700) has been involved in eight goals since the Bundesliga’s return which is second only to Lewandowski. One player that has impressed me since the Bundesliga returned has been Freiburg’s Vicenzo Grifo ($7,300). Since the resumption, Grifo has four assists and scored twice which has seen a rise in his value for the season finale. Dusseldorf needs Rouwen Hennings ($6,800) to continue his rich vein of form in front of goal if they are to secure the relegation playoff place. Hennings has an impressive total of 15 goals this campaign and that includes four in his four starts since the league resumed. Wolfsburg brings the curtain down on their season with Bayern Munich visiting the Volkswagen Arena. Wout Weghorst ($7,700) can shine the light on his game with another impressive game against the champions. Five goals in his last four matches will keep the Bayern’s defense busy. Prediction: Bas Dost to score against Paderborn (-112) Set your lineups here: Bundesliga $40K Counter Attack [$10K to 1st].
