Liverpool are English Premier League champions for the first time

While sitting at home and watching on tv with the rest of the world, Liverpool claimed its inevitable 2019-20 English Premier League title today as Manchester City fell 2-1 at Chelsea to mathematically ensure what had been academic for months.

The Premier League began with the 1992-93 season, taking over for the old English Football League First Division. It’s the first time Liverpool has won the top domestic prize since 1990, when Kenny Dalglish was a player-manager, and the side was led by stars such as John Barnes and Ian Rush. In the interim the Scousers had won three FA Cups, three league cups, a UEFA Cup, and of course two unforgettable UEFA Champions League titles in 2005 and last season in 2019. But if you ask many on The Kop, this is the trophy they’ve craved the most.

In one of the most competitive leagues in the world, the numbers are just mind-boggling.

• They were the first EPL team ever to have a 25-point lead.
• They’ve won 23 straight league matches at Anfield. Not failed to lose with some draws mixed in: WON.
• Three more wins makes them the first EPL side to win all 19 at home in a season. Sunderland in 1892 did this in the old First Division, but with only 13 home matches.
• The record is 100 points in a season (Man City 2018), and they have seven matches to get 15 points to break it.
• They are the first club to win the title with six matches in hand, and the first with seven matches in hand.

You could argue for that 2018 Man City side or Arsenal’s Invincibles as the best EPL side ever, but it will be tough to eliminate this vintage of Liverpool from that conversation.

What Jurgen Klopp has done since arriving on Merseyside has been a revelation, and with plenty of young talent and enough revenue to keep stars such as Mo Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Sadio Mane, they don’t look to be disappearing from the conversation anytime soon either.
